"...I'll do it for you".

While there is not much time spent in 'Downtime' devoted to Artemis, we do (for the first time in the series at least) see Artemis interacting with her mother Paula Crock. What happens in this part is that Paula gives Artemis an acceptance letter from a prep school in Gotham; one can see in the bottom of the letter that Bruce Wayne signed to give her a scholarship where her school would be paid for completely. Artemis is at first confused by this as she never applied to join this school, but Paula tells her that it is not a scholarship you qualify for; only given to those in need.

Artemis cannot accept it and crumples the paper. One could only speculate why she does this outside of the fact that she says that she does not want to leave her friends at the school she attends at that time. Which the friends could be the legitimate reason because she has not had a good family history, to say the least; so her friends may have been the only people she has had a good connection to, although later in the series we see that she may not have trusted them all that much due to her history. We have seen that Artemis does show some knowledge of science in 'Denial' where she speculates with Wally why Dr. Fates' house is concealed; so it is possible she could be given this for her knowledge alone, not just Wayne being generous. Given that Artemis trust very few people, it is also very possible that she does not think that privileged kids in a prep school could be anyone of real worth, much less trusting them to be friends.

Paula, not wanting to see her daughter throw away a chance few people get, tries to threaten Artemis with making her quit the team if she does not take the scholarship. Artemis knows that she cannot enforce the rule, so she blows it off initially. Paula, fairly upset, reminds her that this is an opportunity she herself never had; again we do not know her history so we do not know if Paula ever finished school before she turned to crime, so it's fun to speculate at times what that line could mean outside of the fact that she in the wheelchair and cannot go back even if it were possible to erase her criminal records. Artemis sees that this would hurt her terribly if she passed up the scholarship opportunity, so she says, "Okay mom, I'll do it for you".

That is all for this post. This episode shows how this show can say so much with maybe three minutes in total for their characters in an episode. I will tell you guys now, the next post will be about the tie-in comic story where Artemis is forced to go to prison, temporarily. I knew that the story was based before this as it starts right after Kent Nelson's funeral, but I told you guys two posts ago that I would write about 'Denial". So, hopefully after this next post, they will always be in chronological order. Thanks for being patient with me guys, hope you are enjoying my analysis.
