From the opening shot of Artemis in 'Humanity', we are reminded that her training does rival that of Robin's; because she does knock him down. One could say that since Artemis has been on the team for a few months, she may have improved from that, not saying that she hasn't improved at all because of that factor, but that could hardly explain her being able to rival Dick. When it comes down to it, both Artemis and Dick only have acrobatics and hand to hand combat as there only defense. Being such, they have to be great at their specific skill set to be able to keep up with the members with powers. As the last thing any team needs are a few members that constantly need to be protected or taking away any kind of mental break from the mission and the best way to execute victory.
Once the training session ends, 'Zatara' comes with the first appearance of Zatanna in this universe. Unlike most versions, this version of Zatanna is significantly younger; maybe around Dick's or Artemis' age. As such, this makes Zatanna the perfect match for Artemis' friendship; because Zatanna has something Artemis has never had, a good father or male figure. While there is much more to dissect with this relationship, it will be explored in a later episode called 'Secrets'.
After Zatanna is introduced to the team, Conner starts a telepathic conversation with the team about what they are going to do with their search for 'Red Tornado'. Zatanna, however, picks up on the fact that they are having a conversation, forcing the team to speak their concerns out loud to Zatara and Dinah. Once they are told to stay out of the matter, naturally they start to leave. The team wonders what they are going to do with Zatanna, but she is perfectly willing to come along saying that they could "...kidnap her". Once Zatanna says this, the team begins to understand(as well as the audience) that she is going to be a mainstay for the remainder of the series; capped by Artemis' line, "Oh, she's gonna fit in great".
Wondering how they could do any better detective work, considering Batman had been searching for Red Tornado for several weeks. They ask Zatanna if she could find him, similar to how Zatara found the 'Injustice League'. Zatanna's response defines the limits for most magic users in this universe(with the exception of 'Doctor Fate' or 'Klarion', as both are Lords of Order and Chaos), saying that spells have to be memorized perfectly and inner energy. Similar in many ways to bending in the 'Avatar: Last Airbender' universe. Wally suggest that they go to T. O. Morrow's rival, Ivo, hoping that he is angry enough at him to rat him out.
By the time they get to Belle Rev, 'Hugo Strange'(made warden after the events of 'Terrors') has likely given Ivo time to prepare for an interrogation. So while Me'gan does her best to grill Ivo, he has somehow learned to resist them(possibly a piece of technology). However, Zatanna uses a spell to get the location of Morrow. This is clearly unexpected to Strange and the team with the look he gives; but this is a note that will not be forgotten, in the fact that this team may have a magic user as a regular member.
There is not much to say about Artemis during the whole 'Red Volcano' fight. There is one more scene in the episode which could be said a character moment for Artemis. Once the team heads back to 'Mount Justice', Artemis and Dick are the ones to ask if Zatanna is going to stay on the team. Jokingly, Zatanna says she would ,"If her dad doesn't ground her for life". The reason that this is important to note, is the fact that Artemis will Zatanna's closest friend this season; and Dick will date her sometime between seasons one and two.
That is all for this one guys. I know that there was quite a bit of information to ingest for a blog(if not mistaken this is nearly the length of the combination two story blog); but this only gets more dense with material as it goes farther into the series. I did not think this justified two parts. The next episode will be more evenly split in blogs. So, stay tuned for one of the most revered episodes of this series, "Failsafe'.
