"What Could Go Wrong"?

Alright guys, it's time to begin my most anticipated episode to discuss since I started this blog. Be aware that this is just covering Artemis' side to this series, there is so much density in this episode(as most episodes are in this series, but this one especially) that if I were to cover all the subtleties and character bits in this episode we would be here till season 3 lands. With all that established, let's peak into the journey found in 'Depths'.

The episode starts out with Artemis saying that she is ready while Wally is watching G. Gordon Godfrey give another of his anti-alien rants. Wally is clearly dreading the time that Artemis is leaving, which one could gather from his words later, but from his facial expression alone, one gets it immediately. Wally starts objecting to the fact that Dick asked Artemis to be a part of this mission. Artemis does bring up the fact that Wally put on the costume again with the events of the previous episode 'Bloodlines', he defends himself by saying that it was necessary for him to wear the costume again; but Artemis uses that reasoning to justify her reasons for going on the mission. Just in case anyone was not sure of the status of where Wally and Artemis were in the superhero gig, Wally establishes that they were trying to leave that life in this scene. This could mean that Wally and Artemis have quit rather recently, maybe a few months, but one could also see an argument made for this attempting to be done a year or two ago. Artemis tries to assure Wally that she knows what she's doing by saying; "What could go wrong"? The scene cuts to some time later in the mission where we see Dick trying to resuscitate Artemis, unsuccessfully. The scene ends with Dick saying that Artemis is dead.

After the opening logo, we cut to earlier that day where the team is discussing what they are going to do with Bart Allen(Impulse) and the original Roy Harper. After a few minutes of strong character moments in this scene, Artemis comes into the cave, immediately welcomed by Me'gan. There is no way of knowing how long it has been since Artemis and Me'gan have seen each other but with the comment on how Wally is, one could assume that they kept in touch as Me'gan seems to be the one Artemis has become closest to, that is still on the team; I say this as a technicality as Zatanna has joined the Justice League. While it's unclear how long it has been since Artemis has left, she can not have been gone too long as she recognizes Mal Duncan, whom she would not know since she did not attend the school Me'gan and Conner were attending in season 1. A simple comment to Conner is interrupted by La'gan who says it is an honor to finally fight beside the archer. Artemis seems creeped out by this a little bit, but it could show that Mal and Karen Beecher(Bumblebee) have been on the team longer than the new recruits consisting of: Tim Drake, Blue Beetle, and Le'gan), since Mal doesn't say anything about this being the first mission he was aware of Artemis fighting in these missions. Now, that doesn't mean that Mal and Karen needed to join the team to know if Artemis, Conner, and Me'gan were on a team of people reporting to the Justice League; but it's likely, since later on in the series we see that Wendy(another member of the Bumblebee's) is not aware of Conner being on a team.

After the introductions/re-introductions, Dick informs the team that they will be protecting the rocket from 'Ferris Air', which is trying to make some sort of communication to Mars; which was Godfrey's whole rant that Wally was watching earlier. There is a look of disappointment from Me'gan that people from earth feel this way, as most people think that the media represents the majority of a specific part of the world. Artemis knows that the whole representation is garbage so to comfort Me'gan she tells her that not all people feel that way. Before the scene ends, we get a mention that Dick will be involved in this mission as he has been leading the team for a year and, "Is peckish for a little action".

That's all for this part of the episode. Sorry for those of you that do not like theorizing about the timeline and relationships. I know that it was very theory heavy this time, but hopefully it still ties into the character development, which is always what my goal has been for this blog series. Next time should not be nearly so dense with timeline theories. Hope you guys enjoyed and should be back soon with the next part of 'Depths'.
