"Mankind is Another Story, Altogether."

Well, I'm back. After more than a month, I'm going to start with two new blog series; possibly three but we'll see about that last one. I've decided to make this decision because the one I'm starting with in this post will not last as long as my previous blog series-which is still going to continue once I see the third season of 'Young Justice' twice-and I also wanted to start doing something with the comics themselves. This second blog series-as most comic fans know-can be a daunting task to follow an entire character. Either way, both should last a decent amount of time and I hope everyone enjoys what's coming. Without further ado, let's begin season two-if you will-of the superheroine journey with the 2017 film, 'Wonder Woman'.
Before we begin, let me be clear, I'm doing this film first and may continue with Diana in the few scenes she appears in 'Batman v Superman'. The reason I choose not to start with that film is for two reasons: one is that it's chronologically out of order and makes little sense to begin with that film even if this one came out a year later, two is that Gal Gadot and some other official crew members have stated that Warner Bros. and the writing team have- more or less- retconned the character Diana with the 2017 film; slightly. Make no mistake, I will continue with Diana's scenes in 'Justice League' and 'Wonder Woman: 1984' and all the other DC films to come in the future which she appears.
The first time we hear Diana in the story is through her narration of seeing earth through a satellite view. Diana states that, "I used to want to save the world.", which is an interesting statement as we know the character we are about to see- in essence- saying she has given up on trying to solve the entire world's problems.
Sure, with the lenses of a second viewing, one could give another meaning or interpretation other than a completely depressed superhero. As is it is a strange piece of dialogue to open a comic book film. Particularly with the follow up line, "I knew so little then.", which is a sentiment which is universal as each person grows up and has there own moment of truth.
Diana continues her speech by saying that the world is a beautiful place, worth cherishing in every way, but only once you get close can you see the gruesome details. Keep in mind, she is still referring to the earth itself. So, just saying that the earth itself is corrupt without mankind's interference is continuing her pessimistic view of the world itself that can be interpreted on a first viewing.
Now Diana gets down to the biggest enigma of all when she states, "Mankind is another story, altogether.", which if anyone came in with any prior knowledge of Wonder Woman, one might think it is very much the unrealistic-and most misinterpreted- view that man is the poison and women are the gender of perfection; thankfully this is not the message the film is trying to get across as the film goes on to show.
The final line in terms of Diana's views is given when she says, "What one does when faced with the truth is more difficult than you think.", which is a sum up of Diana's entire journey throughout this story. May not be caught on a second or third viewing, but given what comes late in the film this gives her an entire reason of why she has been out of the game so long. This could also be a way of Diana trying to humble herself and empathize with everyone when they come to the crisis of belief type of moment she will come to at the end of the film. This is nailed down with her line of saying, "I learned this the hard way a long time ago.", while claiming to never be the same.
With her line of a long time ago, certainly that phrase is always up to interpretation, whether literal or in terms of growth and maturity. In this case it's both with photo at the end of the scene and the end of the film, but once the camera comes up on Diana's face she doesn't look old enough to say that term literally until the photo reveals she looked the same back in WWI.
To finish up this post, let's end with discussion of the photo a little more. The photo is sent in a briefcase that is delivered by Wayne Enterprises. Being a continuation of Batman v Superman, Bruce sends a note with the photo saying that he was able to find the original and hopes that by doing this, she could tell him her story sometime. With the acquisition of this photo, Diana begins to reminisce.
That's all for this post guys. Glad to be back with discussion of my favorite movie of all time. I plan to do these scene by scene or sequence by sequence. Depends on how much meat is in a scene. Just a warning there is a lot, particularly everything on Themyscira. I will continue this series in two weeks with my next series being started next week so stay tuned. Thanks for reading guys.
