Alright guys, glad to be back for another post for this movie that I hope to get through by the end of the year, but no promises. I'm not rushing this and definitely want to take my time dissecting every bit of juice I can possibly get from Diana's character in this film. Though.. I'm sure on future viewings I will notice even more things; that's just the nature of art. Anyway, let's get down to the analysis of Diana's first meeting with Steve.
After Diana beats Antiope with the unknown power of her gauntlets and scares the other Amazons, she goes to a cliff to meditate or reflect to try to understand what everything means. Where does that power come from? Why has no one ever told her about them, since clearly they had to have some understanding of the possibility that the earthquake affect could happen? Is she ever going to be able to fulfill the purpose she wants to complete when she injures someone she loves when she reaches her full potential; possibly not even that was her fullest.
The time to reflect on all of these things is cut short as Diana hears the sound of an airplane, as one comes crashing through the shield around the island, into the water.
Diana may not know if she possibly could help in the situation, considering she has never seen an airplane or how it works. She thinks about not getting involved for a few seconds, but after a quick glance at(presumably) the gauntlets, she jumps off the cliff into the water. That last part being a nice call back to her as a child jumping off similar cliffs, the only difference now is that there is no mother to hold her back and she has trained to reach her potential.
This is the first scene that establishes Diana and her mission throughout the remainder of the movie and her life: If no one else is going to help, or she is the first person able to help, she will always be the first to take the dive regardless of her own safety. If nothing else this is one of the purest example of what a hero is by definition.
The only thing that I should mention during the sequence where Diana drags Steve from the water is just a show of her strength with a subtle beat. When Steve hits the water, he immediately starts pulling at the ejector to escape, he never manages to do it even after the entire plane begins to submerge. Once Diana starts trying to get him out of the seat, she notices that pulley and nonchalantly pulls it out and throws it away, making their way to the surface.
Once Diana gets Steve to semi-dry land, she starts inspecting him. She looks bewildered, understandably so, because(as everyone knows) there are differences between men and women. Not too many that makes much of a difference, she can still tell he's human, and gets pretty quickly that he's a man; but still. She might have began CPR, living on an island that would assumedly be a mandatory skill, but her curiosity only gets to the point where she touches his face as he begins to cough out the water.
Steve wakes up and studies Diana as she continues to look at him. Diana is really giddy with her statement of "You're a man." and why not? If anyone from our world discovered something from our mythology, and make no mistake man is part of Amazon mythology as much as the gods themselves, such as a Centaur or something like that; that person would be filled with a strange joy. The fact that something that has never been seen with their own eyes are true, would certainly add a great amount of faith in things that seem impossible. Which I believe is the case with her view of humanity in this film and a perfect harmony among men till the end of time.
Diana's new revelations don't stop as she tells Steve that they are on Themyscira and he has no idea of what she is talking about. Now.. maybe she wonders how he got through the shield(who knows how many times outsiders have appeared in Amazon history, she was just not made aware of it), or maybe she doesn't know the division of race and belief in mankind; all she has ever known is one culture, that of the Amazons.
The questions do not get answers yet, because the Germans and their battleships make their way toward Themyscira, and Diana's first exposure to war is about to begin.
That's all for this one guys. Silly me, somehow I thought this one was not going to be as long as the average of the other post. Thank you for reading and I will be back with another step in Diana's journey.
