"Step Away from her, Now!"

Welcome back. We are about to analyze one of the most iconic scenes in the film. Most of the character moments are given through visuals over dialogue in this scene, so it may be shorter(but when have I ever stuck to that). Without further ado, let's begin Diana's first taste of war.

As the German boats make their way towards the island, Steve tells Diana that he is not on their side. Before he can finish his explanation(whether he was going to give a full one is unknown), Hippolyta tells him to get away from Diana. Which she cannot be blamed, even if he hasn't done anything to harm her, he is still a: male, outsider, and a potential enemy due to the ships coming at the moment.

With the archers at the ready, Diana's first battle is about to begin.

Steve starts pulling her towards the rocks, reason being that they don't have weapons. Maybe she blames herself for what follows, but after the two sides begin the crossfire, Diana's first experience with death is shown when a bullet kills an Amazon. The character is never given a name, but the facial expressions show that the fact doesn't matter to Diana, because she has been sheltered from reality, it's possible that it's the first death she's witnessed even of natural cause; considering the long life the Amazons seem to posses.

Once the first of the many realities of war come crashing down on her, she sees even more Amazons die in succession, until Antiope comes in with her army and a smile giving her the joy of doing battle again after who knows how many years.

Diana doesn't stay away from the battle long after Steve enters the fray and he tells her to stay where she is. Why he says this makes some sense given the time period, and the fact that she still doesn't have any weapons, and as far as he knows, training. I don't think it's entirely because she's a woman, because he's just witnessed dozens of women fight with clear strategy and prowess. So after he takes down one guard with his fists, she takes up the bow and sword taking down her first opponents.

Though Antiope shows why she is the greatest warrior of the Amazons, she goes out the only way she could; sacrificing herself by jumping in front of a bullet headed toward Diana.

That alone has to weigh on Diana and must be one of her first feelings of guilt. I say this because Antiope is dead because Diana forgot the last lesson she taught her: never let you're guard down. Whether it's because of her lack of experience or because she is slow to change/learn.

When Diana comes to Antiope's side, Steve is quick to follow. Antiope's last words are: "The time has come", "You must go" and seems to try to something other than "The godkiller". With those lines, Diana loses the person she may have been the closest to on this island; due to all the years of training.

Even though it's still several sequences before she leaves Themyscira, it's irrefutable that Antiope's death has to be at least part of the reason why Diana decides to leave the island. Of course there are other reasons, but we'll get to those as the film progresses.

Hippolyta sends a death glare at Steve and makes advances before Diana shields him, convincing her because he fought alongside her. Not able to finish the defense before another Amazon asks what kind of man fights against his own people(something to note for scenes to come)? Even after he says that they aren't his people, his spy training kicks in, not answering their questions. Another Amazon suggest that they kill him, and Diana seems surprised at that; which does show that while she wants to fight, her heart is not one of a warrior that is willing to do anything to win. Which is a subtle piece to show her journey towards becoming more of a peacemaker than a warrior.

In the end the Amazons decide that they can't learn anything if Steve is dead. More of a strategy against further potential attacks. Leading Steve to their version of an interrogation room.

That's it for this one guys. Thanks for reading and hope that you enjoyed my thoughts and theories. Next week we'll talk about Steve's reason for being in the German uniform and Diana's plea to the Amazons. See you then.
